The West Virginia Folklife Program is now accepting applications for the inaugural West Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship Program. The Apprenticeship Program offers up to a $3,000 stipend to West Virginia master traditional artists or tradition bearers working with qualified apprentices on a year-long in-depth apprenticeship in their cultural expression or traditional art form with the aim to facilitate the transmission of techniques and artistry of the forms as well as their histories and traditions.  The 2017-2018 West Virginia Folklife Apprenticeships will begin on December 15, 2017, and run through December 1, 2018.

The former Weirton Steel Basic Oxygen Plant (BOP) & blast furnaces are being demolished this fall. Inspired by this major change in the city’s skyline, the Hancock Co. Arts Council created this last-chance, juried art competition, calling for artists to capture the BOP and blast furnaces and the impact they have had on our city and the nation.

A $500 Best in Show prize will be awarded, along with first and second place prizes in oil; acrylic; watercolor; pastel; drawing (such as charcoal or colored pencil); and mixed media/collage and printmaking.

Registration is open now through Oct. 31. Artwork will not be submitted until January 2018, giving artists a few months to complete their submission. All work must be original and completed during the contest period. Artists must be 18 to enter.

The Pleasants Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking local vendors, artists and crafters interested in the annual pop-up retail store concept. The Chamber wants to provide temporary retail outlets in Pleasants County for artists, craftsmen and vendors to sell their products on a part-time seasonal basis running through November and December.

Tamarack is looking for the Best of West Virginia at an upcoming December 1, 2017 jury session to be held in Huntington. Every item sold in the Tamarack facility is first approved through a jury process. In this process, an artist’s product is critiqued by a panel of Master Craftspeople and Artists who look for outstanding craftsmanship, unique design, creativity, and use of materials that are of exceptional quality. Each artist’s work is evaluated and critiqued by jurors who work within their media type.

Marshall University’s School of Art & Design is pleased to invite artists working in any media to submit entries to the 7th Annual National Juried Exhibition. Accepted works will be displayed in Marshall University’s Charles W. and Norma C. Carroll Gallery in the Visual Arts Center located in downtown Huntington, WV from January 8 – February 16, 2018. This year’s submissions will be juried by Bill May, Executive Director of the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.

Governor and First Lady Justice invite West Virginia artists of all ages to create ornaments for the Artistree display at the Culture Center Great Hall during the 2017 holiday season.  The tree showcases West Virginia artwork throughout December at the Culture Center.  The ornaments will be featured in a commemorative catalog and artists will be invited to a celebration at the Culture Center.

Gallery Eleven is a West Virginia artist co-op with the mission of presenting a diverse range of West Virginian artistic expressions. The Crazy Eights annual small works exhibit is the only non-juried exhibition of the year.  All ages and media are accepted.  Galley Eleven strives to connect new and emerging artists with established working artists and exhibition opportunities through the annual event.

The National Art Exhibition is one of the nation’s most prestigious juried exhibitions of two-dimensional media. Punta Gorda is geographically situated in Southwest Florida between Sarasota and Naples, an affluent art-buying market. . The exhibition will take place at the Visual Arts Center, February 2 – March 20, 2018.  Total prizes over $7,000.
