I have always been interested in rendering human faces and bodies in art, and have used a huge variety of media and approaches to do it. I have an active imagination and dream life, which I think fosters my love for surrealism in art. I try to capture the spirit of people I draw and paint- I often say that I paint the outside of people to show the inside of them.
Currently I am in love with oil paint and am inspired by a constantly growing and varied list of artists. I use a combination of traditional layers and more expressive alla prima techniques to portray my subjects, and often create a mixed media effect with the use of mediums, graphite, and gold and silver leaf.
The only thing I love equally to painting is painting alongside someone who wants to learn.
I am a 36 year old artist, maker, and art educator from Barboursville, WV. I am mostly focused on exploring the figure in oil paintings, sculptures, and life drawing, though I am often playing with a huge variety of other media and approaches to art making on the side. I consistently show work in galleries and have several public sculptural works as well.
I have experience teaching studio drawing and art education courses at the college level, and spent the past three years as a studio art teacher at Cabell Midland High School. I am now Program Director of /Māk/ Art Gallery & Community Studio in Barboursville, WV. I am passionate about teaching art and am excited about facilitating a rich art community in this area to help creatives of all ages reach their full potential. I am committed to lifelong learning, making, and teaching, and am always looking for new and exciting creative opportunities.
