Market & Presentation Opportunities for Artists – December 2018


Wheeling Heritage Mural Project

Wheeling Heritage is asking artists to share their vision of Wheeling for a mural project. The mural will be created at Kossuth Park, the small green space at the intersection of Route 2 and Interstate 70 in downtown Wheeling.  Proposals should evoke a sense of community, celebrate Wheeling, and be designed for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.  The finished mural will be 20 feet wide and 10 feet tall and is intended for completion by April 1, 2019. Project budget not to exceed $4,500.

A committee from Wheeling Heritage will select up to four projects. Those four projects will be featured on Wheeling Heritage’s website, where the community will vote for their favorite. The design that receives the most votes will be selected for the mural. Not only will community members vote on the mural, but they will also have the chance to participate in its creation. The project will have a community involvement aspect, such as a paint by numbers section or designated section to be painted by the community, as decided upon by the artist.

The Oglebay Institute’s annual Holiday Art Show & Sale is an extraordinary holiday shopping event featuring fine art and crafts from the region’s most talented artists. The exclusive six-week show provides an outstanding opportunity for selected artists to sell to thousands of enthusiastic shoppers in TWO ideal locations – the historic Stifel Fine Arts Center, located on the highly traveled National Road in Wheeling, and the Schrader Environmental Education Center, located in the world-class Oglebay Park. The show runs November 15 through December 29, 2018.

The Berkeley Art Works is located at 116 North Queen Street in Martinsburg, WV.  It is a project of the Berkeley Arts Council and home to a select group of local artists whose work is for sale in the gallery.  The co-op currently has one open space for a two-dimensional artist and one open space for a three-dimensional artist.

WVU Libraries is developing an interdisciplinary exhibit for 2019-20 themed around Appalachian Futures. Content is sought from scholars, artists and practitioners from a range of fields to integrate into a curated exhibition that will be interpreted, designed, and installed next spring/summer, and potentially travel throughout the state. This collaborative, multidisciplinary exhibit and programming will address the dominant contemporary narratives about Appalachia in a new way— how the people of Appalachia have worked and will work to rewrite their own narrative and transcend limiting definitions of what it means to be Appalachian. The creatively designed, accessible and interactive exhibit will synthesize humanities research, art, and civic action inviting viewers to explore the often overlooked communities of Indigenous Appalachia, “Affrilachian” (African American in Appalachia), and queer Appalachia. It will also ask viewers to examine Appalachian tradition and culture; the intersections between extraction industries, new technology, and science; literacies and education in Appalachia; as well as speculative futures for the region. The exhibit will use scholarship and creations to tell stories about the broader ideas and relationships among the various Appalachian identities, past present and into the future.

FestivALL Director Brittany Javins invites you to apply for the 15th annual FestivALL Capitol Street Art Fair and/or the 7th annual FestivALL Harvest Art Fair. Both of these fairs are juried by a panel of professional artisans and art administrators with a mission of displaying and selling fine art and fine crafts in Charleston, West Virginia. The FestivALL Capitol Street Art Fair takes place on June 29 and 30, the last two days of FestivALL, which is a ten-day festival of the arts. The FestivALL Harvest Art Fair takes place on October 12 and 13, the last two days of FestivALL FALL, which is a three-day festival.

Brickscape is a six week residency program that culminates in a public exhibition. Previous experience creating installation artworks is not required. Eight to twelve artists will be selected to create temporary, site-specific installation art pieces in a vacant historical space in downtown Charleston, WV.  Each artist is designated an area in the space in which to create their installation, with 24 hour access. At the end of the residency, the space will open to the public and the completed installation pieces will be on display for a month-long exhibition.

A $700 stipend is provided to each artist to cover all material and travel costs. Artists who live more than an hour away are required to reside in Charleston for the entire duration of the residency. Free housing is provided by members of the community who make their guest rooms or apartments available.

Socially engaged or process-based artists who don’t identify with any particular medium are also eligible and encouraged to apply. Preference is given to proposals that provide an immersive or interactive environment accessible to a diverse audience. In addition, Brickscape prefers proposals for temporary, site-specific works, which are designed solely for the space in which they are created.

The Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, a production of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, is a 10-day celebration of the arts in downtown Pittsburgh unlike any other in the nation. This world-class, multi-disciplinary festival is free to attend and open to the public, attracting nearly a half-million visitors annually.

The Artist Market features 350+ independent artists in an open-air setting, selling handmade art from 12 – 8 pm daily.

$10,000 in cash awards.  80% of artists earn more than $2,500.

Artists are invited to submit letters of interest and qualifications to create site-specific outdoor sculpture as part of Troy Main Street’s 2019 Sculptures on the Square. The Selection Committee is looking for a sculpture that is around 4 feet wide x 4 feet deep x 8 feet tall. Project budget $2,000.

Troy Main Street’s biennial Sculptures on the Square has been taking place since 2003 and regularly attracts thousands of visitors from the surrounding communities and states. Located just 20 miles north of downtown Dayton, OH, off of Interstate 75, Troy is an easy drive from Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland, OH; Detroit, MI; Lexington, Frankfort, and Louisville, KY; Indianapolis, IN; Chicago, IL, and Pittsburgh, PA.

The 2019 Sculptures on the Square event, scheduled to run from June 13 – September 13, 2019, is expected to include public displays of approximately 20 Seward Johnson figures, the selected Regional Sculpture Artist, and art located in and around downtown businesses. The selected artwork will be installed at a featured location in the Sculptures on the Square event and included in marketing materials alongside the Seward Johnson sculptures.

The Basketry Now: 10thAnniversary Exhibit will be held, at The Kentucky Museum on the campus of Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green in conjunction with the National Basketry Organization’s 2019 Biennial Conference, July 16-December 1, 2019. The goal of the exhibition is to showcase benchmarks of excellence in basketry that demonstrate superior technique and original concept and design. Three Excellence in Basketry Awards will be selected, as well as five honorable mentions. Award winners selected will have their artworks published in NBO’s quarterly publication, newly renamed Basketry+. Submissions will be evaluated on concept, design, technique, craftsmanship and creative exploration.

The NBO biennial exhibitions have become an important record of artistic work within traditional and contemporary basketry. They are unique in their focus on basketry and in their inclusion of the full range of work being executed by well-known and emerging artists.  All work in the show will be in a gallery of photographs on the NBO website and given exposure in other online media. NBO encourages both established and emerging artist to submit work for consideration for this prestigious exhibition.

The Olin Art Gallery on the campus of Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, PA, is now accepting exhibition proposals in any medium for the 2019-20 academic year. Proposals may include solo or group exhibitions. Submissions must include: 10-20 digital images (jpg-format), contact information, artist statements for all participating artists, an image list (including title, media, size, and date completed for each work), and a resume or CV. The Philadelphia Furniture Show

The Philadelphia Furniture Show is a juried exhibition and sale of exceptional artisan quality furniture and is the longest running exhibition of its kind. Now in its 25th year, the show continues to set the bar for the finest heirloom handmade furniture and furnishings in the United States. Held at the 23rd Street Armory in downtown Philadelphia, PA’s Rittenhouse Square neighborhood, PFS features 85-100 of the finest furniture makers in the US and beyond. Show dates: October 4-6, 2019

Six jurors who are experts in the field choose up to 100 artists from a large pool of applicants. Artists are selected on the basis of the originality, conception, and craftsmanship of their work.

The Philadelphia Furniture Show is primarily furniture with an allowance of up to 10% of exhibitors in the home décor, lighting, art and ceramics categories.

The Ann Arbor Street Art Fair (AASAF) transforms central Ann Arbor into a massive outdoor art gallery each July.  It was voted one of the “Top Ten Best Art Festivals” in the country in an USA TODAY Reader’s Poll and is continually in the Art Fair Calendar “Top Ten Best Art Fairs” & Art Fair Source Books “Elite 25”.  In addition, AASAF ranked 8th in the nation in the latest Sunshine Artist’s “Top 100 Fine Art Shows” poll.

Established in 1960 with a mission of increasing public knowledge and appreciation for contemporary fine arts and fine crafts.  The fair is known for its consistently high quality, all original work.  $8,000 in artists awards will be distributed in 2019.  The Street Art Fair will take place from July 18 – 21, 2019 and reside on the streets surrounding the historic Burton Carillon Tower and the tree-lined central campus of the University of Michigan.

The Twenty-Eighth National Exhibition and Convention will be hosted by Illume Gallery of Fine Art and Oil Painters of America from May 10 through June 7, 2019.  Convention activities begin on May 6, with a Wet Paint Competition in both studio and plein air divisions.  Cash and merchandise awards for the Wet Paint competition will be a minimum of $10,000. The opening reception for artists, collectors, the public and the press will be held on Friday, May 10, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with the awards presentation taking place at 7:30 p.m.

The focus in the jurying process will be to select paintings that show the highest quality in draftsmanship, color, and composition, emphasizing a diversity in representational style and subject matter. The awarding juror will be an OPA Master Signature member. Total awards will be approximately $100,000, including a $25,000 Best In Show.

The American Craft Exposition, held at the Chicago Botanic Garden, September 19-22,  is open to all craftsmen who are residents of and working in the United States. Work must be produced by the craftsmen or under their personal supervision and be made by hand or with appropriate tools. Cash awards will be made for outstanding work in various categories. Over $17,000 in award money was presented to craftsmen at the 2017 show.

An Emerging Artist category is available to those who have been practicing their craft for less than six years and who have never exhibited at ACE. The application procedure and fees are the same as above, however those applying in the Emerging Artist category will be juried separately from other applicants. Those who are accepted will share a large booth space with other Emerging Artists, thereby reducing their booth expense.

This is a call for the inclusion of public art collections in the Public Art Archive™, an online database of public art. To be considered for inclusion, you must be a professional artist who has completed and installed public artwork, or an administrator of an established public art program. There is no charge to submit entries to the Public Art Archive™.  Public art is defined here as art that is sited in a public place that is accessible or viewable by the general public and was, in most cases, commissioned by a public art entity, typically using percent-for-art or public funding. Gallery art and art exhibited inside galleries and museums is not eligible. Works of art that were commissioned and/or gifted by corporations, museums, educational institutions, private parties, and other entities may be considered eligible. Artworks that have been destroyed are not eligible. Permanently cited, temporary, new media, performative, rotating, and portable works may be eligible if they meet the commonly known definition of public art or civic art.
