The Renaissance Weirton Corp. is launching a new fall event in the City of Weirton: the Gate 5 Industrial Art Festival, scheduled for October 20, 2018. Celebrating the skills and materials that were crafted during the peak of manufacturing in Northern West Virginia, Gate 5 will celebrate art created using metal, clay, glass and re-purposed scrap. The basic structure of the festival will be a daylong event of industrial art vendors and metal-work and pottery demonstrations.

The Weirton Area Museum & Cultural Center has decided to offer a portion of its extensive and precious collection of Weirton Steel Badges for use in the creation of one or more sculptures representative and unique to Weirton for all visitors and citizens to experience in our city.  The City of Weirton Renaissance Committee created this competition to seek out the best sculpture concept(s) from creative and qualified individuals or groups. Selected sculptures created using badges from the museum will be owned by the WAMCC, and, as funds become available, commissioned through a partnership between the Renaissance Committee and WAMCC. The piece will be visible (preferably at an outdoor location) for visitors and citizens in the City of Weirton. A plaque with the creating artist’s name, the mill badge history, and other information about the competition background and sponsors will be included with the completed artwork upon installation.

Each artist’s work is evaluated and critiqued by a panel of jurors who excel within their specific media type.

The Beckley Art Center will host a holiday marketplace November 30 through December 16, 2018.  The market is open to all media and craft. Smaller work and holiday themed items priced under $50 are encouraged, but all themes and prices  are welcome.  The Exhibitions Committee will display items.  Artists are encouraged to work shifts during the market. Shifts will be coordinated at time of delivery.

Marshall University’s School of Art & Design invites artists working in any media to submit entries for the 8th Annual National Juried Exhibition. Accepted works will be displayed in Marshall University’s Charles W. and Norma C. Carroll Gallery in the Visual Arts Center located in downtown Huntington, WV. This year’s submissions will be juried by Steven Matijcio, Curator of the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Exhibit runs  January 7 through February 8, 2019.


The Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition 2019 National Portrait Gallery

The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery invites artists to submit one portrait in any media for consideration in the fifth triennial Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. This year, the focus is on broadening the definition of portraiture and highlighting the genre’s relevance in contemporary art. Artworks may originate from direct encounters between the artist and the sitter, but they may also be representative of indirect encounters. For example, judges will consider portraits that employ existing imagery or archival research as a means of responding to history. Artists are encouraged to think about portraiture’s potential to engage with the social and political landscape of our time.

All finalists’ works will form a major exhibition that will be on view at the Portrait Gallery from November 2019 through September 2020, and there are plans for a subsequent national tour.

The Smithsonian Craft Show

The Smithsonian Craft Show is a most prestigious juried exhibition and sale of contemporary American craft in art and design, held annually in Washington DC.  Three jurors who are experts in the field and newly selected each year choose 120 artists from a large pool of applicants.  Previous exhibitors must re-apply each year.  No one is grandfathered into the show.  There is no quota for any category of Craft Art.  Artists are selected on the basis of the originality, artistic conception, and quality of their work.

The Craft Show does not charge sales commissions.  However, accepted artists are encouraged to donate an item for the Show’s on-line auction, raffle, or other fund-raising initiatives, the proceeds of which benefit the Smithsonian.

The 24th international juried exhibition is dedicated to enhancing the public’s awareness of contemporary craft while providing a venue for established and emerging artists alike to share their functional and sculptural creative endeavors.  The juror is Perry Allen Price, Executive Director, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Houston, Texas. Price will judge the work based on its technique, design, concept, originality and craftsmanship and select the award winners on December 7, 2018. $8,000+ in prizes will be awarded.

This is a call for the inclusion of public art collections in the Public Art Archive™, an online database of public art. To be considered for inclusion, you must be a professional artist who has completed and installed public artwork, or an administrator of an established public art program. There is no charge to submit entries to the Public Art Archive™.  Public art is defined here as art that is sited in a public place that is accessible or viewable by the general public and was, in most cases, commissioned by a public art entity, typically using percent-for-art or public funding. Gallery art and art exhibited inside galleries and museums is not eligible. Works of art that were commissioned and/or gifted by corporations, museums, educational institutions, private parties, and other entities may be considered eligible. Artworks that have been destroyed are not eligible. Permanently cited, temporary, new media, performative, rotating, and portable works may be eligible if they meet the commonly known definition of public art or civic art.
