The purpose of the WV Literary Hall of Recognition Project is to increase the visibility
of the literary figures in this state. This project is an exercise in transformation,
equity, and reclamation, with a vision that WV as a state in which artists of all
mediums and backgrounds are recognized for their contributions to the wholeness
of our culture and society. The literary arts of WV and Appalachia is an art form that
has long been underrecognized and undervalued. We seek to bring more visibility to
the literary arts community, highlight the creative intelligence, intellectualism, and
vastness of human spirit and experience that exists, and has always existed, within
West Virginia and its writers.
The project will result in the creation of portraits of eight literary figures in, from, or
significant to WV in some way, painted by Sassa Wilkes. The portraits will be
displayed at the West Edge Factory in Huntington, in the mezzanine of the black box
theater (currently under construction).
Review the Voting Guide (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-73V1c2D4mCtI9jo0iVp98EcCMNTPdcn/view?usp=drive_link) , select up to 8 literary figures, and cast your vote. Deadline for voting is July 31, 2023.
