About Elaine McMillion Sheldon
At Grounded Theory, we believe the best stories – whether fiction, hybrid, or nonfiction – emerge from real experiences, relationships, and deep listening. Much like the qualitative research method it’s named after, our creative work is built from the ground up. We immerse ourselves in the places and people we’re documenting, allowing meaning to surface naturally through careful observation and exploration.
In grounded theory, patterns and insights shape the understanding of a subject, not the other way around. This mirrors our approach to storytelling: we unravel the complexity of human lives and environments by paying attention to overlooked details. For us, every project is an act of discovery—a way of making sense of the world by letting the story lead.
The name also reflects our dual commitments: being grounded in place, culture, and relationships while embracing the ever-evolving nature of creativity—where nothing is permanent, and every story brings new possibilities. Grounded Theory isn’t just a name; it’s a guiding philosophy for how we create work that feels authentic, subjective, and deeply personal.
Biography
I am an Academy Award-nominated, Peabody-winning, and two-time Emmy-winning documentary filmmaker dedicated to telling intimate, cinematic stories about Appalachia and rural America. My films explore the intersection of economic, cultural, political, and environmental issues, from the opioid crisis (HEROIN(E), RECOVERY BOYS) to the deindustrialization of the coalfields (HOLLOW, KING COAL). My work has screened at major festivals worldwide, including Sundance, Telluride, and Hot Docs, and has been commissioned by Netflix, PBS Frontline, The New York Times Op-Docs, and more.
Born in Southwestern Virginia and raised in Southern West Virginia, I remain rooted in the region, drawing inspiration from its landscapes and people. My 2023 film KING COAL—a poetic meditation on coal’s legacy in central Appalachia—premiered at Sundance and was named a New York Times Critics’ Pick. I am a Guggenheim Fellow, a USA Fellow, a Creative Capital Awardee, and in 2024, I was inducted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Alongside my husband and cinematographer, Curren Sheldon, I run Grounded Theory, a creative studio based in the Appalachian Mountains.
