I have been working with a large format 8×10 camera for my entire photographic career. The camera is my anchor, my grounding, some stained wood, a bellows, a lens, a ground glass. There is a tangible place between my lens and what is in front of it – a nearness, empathy, respect. The camera is large and antiquated, causing me to move slowly, a deliberate dance.

Biography

My work is a photographic exploration of rural America. I am an analog photographer living in Paw Paw, West Virginia, and a traveling educator, often teaching wet plate collodion workshops out of the back of my truck across America. I also teach at the Penumbra Foundation in New York City.  I have been awarded the Aaron Siskind Foundation IPF Grant, PDN’s 30, the Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation Grant, the Tierney Fellowship, and The Everglades National Park Artist Residency.  My work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is in the collection of the Norton Museum, the Ogden Museum, and other private collections worldwide. My Everglades work was published as a monograph (Everglades) in 2016.
