I am fascinated by the way metal can be moved and shaped with heat and hammer. My ideas are created using fire as a “tool” to move such an unyielding material. I study traditional and modern blacksmithing techniques as I work with clients to create functional and decorative work. From a simple hook to large gates for a church, I make sure that all elements have been forged. The details of the work are important to me. The precision necessary for the function, the form, and the finishing are essential for the success of the finished piece.

Biography

My interest in forging metals began in a high school shop class. I am primarily self-taught and continue to add to my repertoire of skills by attending workshops and regional and national blacksmithing conferences. I began my business in 1977 doing craft shows and making custom work.

I grew up in the northern panhandle of West Virginia and moved to Berkeley Springs in the eastern panhandle in 1984. I was the 2005 Touchstone Center for Crafts Artist of the Year and I have enjoyed teaching blacksmithing classes there since 1978. I have also been invited to be a demonstrator for several blacksmithing groups.
