About Silas Endicott
The core of my artistic expression centers on portraying the natural world and my upbringing in rural Appalachia. My aim is to engage with fellow individuals from Appalachia, highlighting the region’s vast diversity, debunking the notion of a uniform populace. Moreover, I strive to challenge negativity by confronting subjects often labeled as “ugly” or “frightening.” Recently, my focus has shifted towards utilizing traditional Appalachian media like weaving or quilting. Through these mediums, I seek to spotlight overlooked yet significant aspects of Appalachian culture, typically marginalized within the realm of “high art.”
Biography
I am Silas Endicott, a resident of Wayne, West Virginia, specializing in mixed-media three-dimensional artistry. My background includes a tenure as a former graphic design and printmaking intern at On the Mark Creations, where I was responsible for creating and printing various forms and screen-printed shirts for local businesses and schools. Additionally, I gained valuable experience by assisting in community-based art workshops tailored for older adults, notably contributing to the Art and Aging program.
My artistic focus revolves around crafting pieces primarily from wood and metal, often incorporating diverse mediums such as textiles and printmaking techniques. My creative inspirations are deeply rooted in familial and Appalachian cultural elements, enriched by my interactions with contemporary artists in the artistic sphere.
In the winter of 2023, I proudly attained my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual Arts, specializing in Sculpture with a minor in marketing from Marshall University. Over time, I have exhibited my artwork at prestigious venues, including Marshall University’s Birke Art Gallery, Student Gallery, Carroll Gallery, and the Library Gallery at Marshall University’s South Charleston Campus. Notable highlights include receiving a third-place award in the 37th Annual Student Juried Exhibition and being invited to participate in the group exhibition titled Conceptions of Flight.
