About Amanda Jane Miller

Working primarily with watercolor on paper, I combine traditional painting with a variety of experimental techniques to make art that is narrative and figurative. Repetition of scenes and personal symbols in my work speak to the therapeutic and process-driven nature of my art practice. I search for quiet storytelling in my pieces, exploring the effects of one’s external environment on one’s own internal spaces. My imagery pulls inspiration from domestic surroundings, history, and my practices of textile weaving and wool spinning.

Biography

I am a multidisciplinary artist making illustrative paintings, animations, and textile art. I’ve worked with watercolor and drawings on paper throughout my life, before studying new media and photography at WVU. I worked in design and video production for 15 years, eventually making my way toward screen printing and machine embroidery. I learned to spin wool in 2014, raised and sheared sheep, and now weave handspun cloth on my Grandmother’s jack loom. Originally from Morgantown, I now live and work in Charleston. I create art in my home studio, and play fiddle and hardingfele.
