About Bear Wood Company – Matt Snyder
We tell stories with West Virginia wood. Bear Wood Company is a small woodworking business in West Virginia specializing in preserving the past and telling local stories with reclaimed wood.
We salvage most of the wood we use from people like you who hate to see a good thing go to waste. Knowing where the wood comes from offers us the opportunity to know its history, which we can then pass on to you. We’ve reclaimed wood from barns, businesses, homes… even bowling alleys and gymnasiums. We found one place where the deed to the home was written before West Virginia was even a state! We write on the back of each piece where the wood came from so you’ll know a bit of its history.
Our goal from the start in 2014 has been to make home furnishings that don’t just look good in any home setting, but to use design elements that actually reflect where we are from. For us, that’s West Virginia. We invite you to stop by one of our showrooms in Hurricane, Charleston, or Morgantown, or log on to bearwoodcompany.com. If you stop in the main woodshop is in Hurricane, we’ll give you the nickel tour and you’ll walk away with a wooden nickel! We hope to see you!
I’ve been making furniture for nearly 30 years now and most recently I’ve been developing a small business called Bear Wood Company. My Wife Angela and I started the company in 2014, and it was really born out of our shared love of our home here in West Virginia. I left a perfectly good paying job to do this so there was an element of risk involved in taking the jump, but so far all of the hard work it’s taken to build a business in WV has been worth it. There’s no place like the Mountain State and to have the opportunity to build a business that we hope will stay relevant in our home state for years to come has meant the world to us.
