Biography
A native of West Virginia, Pat Cross enrolled as the youngest student admitted into Hank Keeling’s college-level drawing class at the University of Charleston, launching her classical art training at age 15. Her rigorous education and art career brought her opportunities from coast to coast Florida to the Pacific Northwest. Active in shows, Pat’s work has displayed in more than 150 fine art exhibitions. The paintings of Pat Cross jury into some of our nation’s most competitive fine art exhibits including Realism New York, Bosque Conservatory, and Salon International. The majority of her collectors live in the United States and Canada with others in Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Mexico and Asia. Publishers her work include International Artist, Oxford University, and Best of America Oil Artists. In 2016, the National Endowment for the Arts and West Virginia Department of Culture and History provided Pat Cross a grant to attend the National Portrait Society Conference in Washington DC. Pat Cross moved her fine art business from the Pacific Northwest back to her roots in West Virginia to care for her parents who, says Cross, “helped develop my aesthetic sense through outdoor adventures and connected me to my first classical art training at age 15.” Soon after moving to West Virginia, Pat Cross juried into Allied Artists of West Virginia, Tamarack’s Best of West Virginia, and Festivall Capital Art Fair. She’s participated in juried shows at the Huntington Art Museum, Parkersburg Art Center, Carnegie Hall Gallery in Lewisburg, David L Dickirson Fine Art Gallery, and the West Virginia 20th Biennial held at the Art Museum at WVU. Soon after, the gallery owner of Gem&I Gallery invited Pat Cross into representation for her paintings and fine art prints which reach visitors who travel from around the world to visit the Greenbrier Resort. In the spring of 2018, the Congressional Arts Committee selected Pat Cross as the Exhibition Juror/Judge as well as the Exhibition Artists’ Workshop Instructor, both events held on the Capitol Campus in the beautiful West Virginia Cultural Center. In 2021, the PACE Foundation awarded a figurative painting by Pat Cross with the Best of Show and People’s Choice Awards. Also in 2021, the jurors and judge of “Great Escape” exhibit awarded a painting by Pat Cross with First Place Award at the Parkersburg Art Center. In 2022, the National Endowment of the Arts and the West Virginia Arts Commission awarded Pat Cross an ARP Arts Grant to produce 30 original artworks in a project called, “Eleanor’s 2020 Vision.” Pat Cross comes full circle not only closer to family but also as an active artist, exhibitor and instructor in the classical tradition of drawing from live models, following in the footsteps of Hank Keeling, her first mentor over 40 years ago.
