About Mary Roy
It is my goal to help bring people and places together despite distance. I strive to bring the one-of-a-kind views from far-off places into someone’s home to have close to them. It’s my hope that by creating hand embroidered landscapes they are transported back to the original emotion-filled moments of experiencing the beauty in nature.
I often ask people what it is like visiting a location that I haven’t had the chance to visit yet, so I can feel the same emotions that they have felt during their time there. So many times, they are filled with tranquility in the vastness of mountains bigger than imagined, beautiful vast skies, and the feeling of being at peace.
As a lover of nature, both flora and fauna come into play in my work. I’m constantly learning about nature in places I’ve never been to. This knowledge helps me capture the tiny details in every landscape, and items found in nature, to create the best work I can. I enjoy being able to play with the precision & minimalism in my simpler pieces and color & maximalism in my complex landscape works.
Each piece begins as plain cotton fabric, cotton embroidery floss, and a fabric pen ready to sketch my vision. Every stitch is a rhythmic reminder of what I’ve learned about a location, the emotions people have felt there, and the natural beauty. Depending on the size and shape of the piece, my landscape pieces take anywhere from 8-36 hours.
Biography
West Virginia based embroidery artist, Mary Roy, pays homage to her Appalachian roots and love for connecting places and people despite distance in her work. She focuses on embroidering landscapes to capture the natural beauty, so those special places can be kept close. As the daughter of a seamstress, she was naturally drawn to fiber art and quickly fell in love with it. being a self-taught artist, she is dedicated to learning and honing in on her craft.
