About Kylie Proudfoot-Payne

Exploring the balance between the light and shadow in the natural environment has been my focus for the past twenty years. This focus and intrigue translates into a myriad of landscape paintings and correlated projects that have predominantly focused on the depiction of color and light. I then utilize acrylic paint on traditional or nontraditional surfaces, to create traditional landscape paintings and murals as well as paintings that can be worn within an installation or performance which activates the space and engages the viewer.
My painting process begins by exploring the area or landscape then studying the light and shadows within that environment. I often capture video clips, audio clips, and photographs to help inform and ground the painting once in my studio. I then develop a variety of color and landscape studies that I use to explore and inform the finished artwork. Recently I have been incorporating this process and prepared content into the finished product by embedding near field communication tags into the painted surface.
Water within the landscape continues to be particularly interesting as clouds, mist, and the reflection of light on the surfaces of rivers and lakes are ever changing. The process of painting color is the way that I explore the world and how I communicate my experience and share it with the viewer. The completed painting or installation is then meant to draw the viewer in and create that moment of distraction from the physical world by leading them into their own memories and ideas that the art activates or inspires.

Biography

I paint light within a landscape on traditional and nontraditional surfaces with acrylic paint. Most often my products are large landscape paintings, installation environments, fabric sculptures or painted costumes. For some projects I integrate tech into the surface of my paintings to further engage the viewer/audience with the painting process. Living in Belington with my family I am often exploring the north central West Virginia area capturing the changing light within the Tygart Valley Watershed. When not creating my own art I am a teaching artist with ArtsBank Inc. a teaching artist residency program in Randolph County and I received a BA in Psychology/Human Services and Art Education from Davis & Elkins college, December 2005.
