About Michael Paul
My work has always been based in trying to better understand the world around me, the people in it, and myself. My writing is primarily within the realm of creative non-fiction and essays while my photography is a little more wide ranging. I’ve created documentary, portraiture, and candid work primarily with the subject matter ranging from the sentimental to the provocative. I take paid commissioned work and collaborations occasionally and have recently started to venture into shooting and producing video. My art has mostly only been a sideline to my day jobs, but I’ve received a grant from the NEA and West Virginia Division of Arts, Culture, and History and I’ve had work presented in galleries in New York and San Francisco.
Biography
I’m a photographer and writer. I’ve lived and worked in Huntington, West Virginia since I was a young child when my father retired and wished to return home to be near family. Our family has roots in West Virginia all the way back to the 1690s. I took up photography in my teens and it’s been a constant practice ever since. Writing became a part of my practice when I first began publishing my work online in the early days of the internet.
