About Sandra Shaw

Shaw Studios, LLC was founded in 2018 after I retired from teaching school. I moved into a new home where I was able to create a studio. That studio is the Blue Dot Studio, where I teach small-group and private painting and drawing classes; and where I create my personal work.
Art With Granny is a nonprofit what was founded in January of this year, 2024. The idea for was born from going into the Pre-K and 1st grade classrooms to do art projects with my granddaughters’ classes. Their school does not offer visual art or music. I find this reprehensible, so Art with Granny will hire retired art teachers to do short-term art residencies to children in schools that do not have an art program.

Biography

I grew up in Pineville, Wyoming County, WV. I now live in the Beckley area. I am a retired art educator of 35 years. I now have two art-based businesses; Shaw Studios and Art With Granny. Art With Granny is a nonprofit I’ve started to send other retired art educators into classrooms of schools that do not offer a visual arts program, to teach short-term residencies to elementary-age children. My studio (The Blue Dot Studio) is in my home where I teach private and small-group painting and drawing classes, as well as create my own work. My personal artwork is a visual representation of the observations of my life, my loves, and my experiences. I work in pastel, oil, and watercolor. Hold a B.S. in Art Education K-2, a Masters of Art in Education, and National Board Certification. I was West Virginia Art Educator of the year in 2013, and 2017, and won the Governor’s Art Award in 20I4. I am a juried Tamarack artist, member of the Beckley Art Group where I serve on the board, and a member of the West Virginia Watercolor Society.
