About Timothy L. Gump
I am a self-taught Wet Virginia artist that enjoys living among the Appalachian Mountains. Inspiration comes easy in a state that offers so much natural beauty along with the history. Most of my time has been spent connecting me to a life in the past and what I enjoy painting the most – the 18/19th century time period. Inspiration for my artwork comes from many sources. If I must narrow it down I would have to say most of it comes from the natural beauty of the landscapes that lie within our magnificent state. The eyes that beheld it long ago saw it in its natural form. There are many distractions in our lives today that can pull each of us away from such beauty making it unnoticeable if we are not careful, but I have noticed the simple ways of life can reconnect us to it once again; such as it did for our ancestors many years ago. My time spent at the easel with my oil paints and brushes recreating a magnificent breath taking view in its natural state and form is more than art – it is a testimonial journey displayed on canvas that everyone can relate to one way or another. With canvas, paint and a brush, I can create a moment in time from the past that is most enjoyable to see and imagine living once again. I have always believed that the artist’s brush can transcend the limits of ordinary vision and become an expression of creative imagination. To me, when this happens, this is the greatest art.
Biography
I am a self-taught full time artist residing in West Virginia. My experience includes designing and painting camouflage patterns for both the hunting and outdoor industry and fashion industry, launching me into a partnership business operating in southern Georgia. This led me to working as an exclusive commercial art designer in apparel merchandise with nationally recognized brands in the hunting and outdoor industry. I also worked as an illustrator for advertisement ranging from print media to various forms of promotional materials utilizing my artwork. I am a juried member of OPA (Oil Painter’s of America) and the David L. Dickinson Gallery, Tamarack Marketplace, Beckley, WV. I recently had a painting selected to be displayed in the OPA Eastern Regional Exhibition and received Winner’s Choice award in the Best of WV exhibition in 2024 at the Tamarack Marketplace for “Cherokee In The Shenandoah Mountain Range”. Currently, I enjoy spending time in my studio working in oils and producing pieces of fine artwork depicting characters of the 18th and 19th century.
